“Why Aren’t Parents and Kids Connecting More?
Hi, everyone, I’m R.K. Alker Best-Selling Children’s Author…
In this video I will discuss ideas about how to:
- Share a warm, fuzzy experience with your child
- Structure 1 on 1 Storytime
- Transition well and make a powerful invitation to connect
- Read with your child
- Savour the moment
- And listen for opportunities to connect
Prioritise time with your children
Enjoy a shared experience with your kids
and connect by reading a book together
The act of reading, calms kids down,
for me, one of the calmest times for my kids is when we sit and read a book together.
Savour the joy of that calm, warm, fuzzy connection, where difficult behaviour just disappears.
Make reading a daily habit — call it Storytime
Make it fun.
Make it their time with you – 1 on 1 time.
Structure it well –Transition well.
Make a powerful invitation to connect.
‘You will turn that tablet off and sit and read this book NOW!’
…is not a great foundation for fun
Allow time to transition from what your child is doing, to Storytime, by encouraging giggling and fun.
Turn off technology, unless you are reading an eBook!
Make the effort for your child.
Switch off your phone, turn off the music and TV distractions.
Make a powerful invitation to connect.
Take time to enjoy 1 on 1 Storytime
Slow down and savour the moment.
Use close contact
hugs are good, eye contact and smiles
It could be a bedtime snuggle and chat
Or Story time on the sofa.
Maybe it’s playtime
Maybe a performance, where you laugh and engage with your child.
This stimulates endorphins and oxytocin that embed happy life moments
and make memories for you and your children.
and finally, listen.
Listen for opportunities to connect
…Maybe your child will open up to you, and discuss things they enjoy or worry them.”

How R.K. Alker Best-Selling Children’s Author Wrote My Grandad vs The Fangazoo
“I was injured in the line of duty and couldn’t run and play with my kids. Instead, I imagined an adventure where we ran and played together. I channelled into the Fangazoo book the positivity I felt and the lessons I had learned about applying positivity in crisis situations on the Lancashire 999 emergency ambulances.
I sat, wrote and lived this hilarious adventure with my kids in the book as they went on a breath-taking, funny adventure with their explorer grandad to find a dragon…
…and the Best-Selling My Grandad vs The Fangazoo was born.”
